the last hoorah

It is nearing 5:30am on our final day in  Japan as this post is being updated.  It's so crazy to think that we have only 7 more hours until the plane leaves from Narita Airport.  But even as we leave our newly made friends and the land we have tilled for the last 27 days, we leave with faith that what we have done, God will now carry through and bring all things to fruit in His time.

But before we leave, we just wanted to share one last time some of the final things we did here in Japan, and more specifically, Akabane Bible Church, this past week.

Starting from where we left off our last post, Monday was our teams day out in Tokyo.  Through the generosity of the church members here at Akabane, we were able to have an excursion to a Yomiuri Giants baseball game at Tokyo Dome as well as a few other memorable sites, all with our very own tour guides.

Our team at Tokyo Dome...go Giants!   (Tokyo that is...not San Francisco...)

A group pose with our faithful tour guides Shimori-san (middle), Kyung Mi-san (far right), Kaori-san (second to right), and Yuya-san (far left)

We finished off the day looking at a nighttime skyline view of Tokyo.  Even on excursion days, God is always showing our team new things about Japan.  The outstretched view of endless city really put into perspective the sheer number of people here in Japan.  And out of those numbers, how few are actually Christian.  Please keep the people of Japan in prayer as the city is so full of artificial lights.  Pray that one day Japan can be lit up just as brightly with the light of Christ.

Moving on, from Tuesday to Friday, our ministry involved prayer meetings at 5:30 am everyday (in fact we have our final prayer meeting in 30 minutes), tract passing, and two English class sessions.  One for adults and one for kids.  Praise the Lord (PTL) and everyone's prayers as a few dedicated people were able to come out to our English camp everyday!  Although it was just simple English conversations, God really used the time spent speaking English to build new relationships with non-Christians in the neighborhood and allowing us to share with them the experience of coming to a church as well as meeting Christians.

Yuko-san came out everyday with her baby just through the tracts we passed out!.  She was so blessed by English class that she came back on Saturday to teach our team a bead craft that she enjoys to do as a hobby!  It was her birthday when she came so we surprised her with a cake and of course, song!

Kanaru and her brother, Taro-kun, came out almost everyday to our children's English camp (also through a tract)!  Their willingness to learn and put themselves in a new environment was truly encouraging.  Pray that God was able to sow seeds of Christ in their hearts!

There were also a few more who came out to English class with whom we weren't able to take a picture with, but please pray that as they came out to Akabane Church, even if it was just for English camp, that God really used that experience to sow the seeds of the gospel in their hearts!

Here at Akabane Bible Church, our team was able to truly experience different aspects of relational ministry, starting with the people from English class.  During the week, we were also given the opportunity to really get close with the Kazuki, the pastor's son, and Kazuki's non-Christian  friend, Yasukazu.  They slept over a couple nights and we were able to build relationships that we pray God will continue to build on the future.  We were also able to meet other church members, while giving them all English names (just for fun).

Kazuki (or Tim) is the one on the far right, Yasukazu (or Ike)  is above him, and the rest of of our friends, Mike (Mike and Ike), Tom, Jerry, and Ben (Tom & Jerry, Ben & Jerry)

Please pray for Yasukazu as he is studying to become a doctor.  He is not a Christian yet, but he is slowly learning more about Christianity (he even joined us for 5:30 am morning prayer!).  Also please pray for our other friends, as they are Akabane church members, that they will be able to continue to find and grow fellowship with each other!

Also, we were able to have...Sento ministry!
So basically the church didn't have a shower to we had to go to the nearby sento to shower every so often.  As we frequented the sento, we were able to befriend the owner and her husband to the point where they came out to English camp once and even helped us advertise for Hawaiian Night!  (they couldnt come because they had to operate the Sento that night...but we visited them after with leftovers!)

We even got to take pictures in the sento!

...after everyone left of course and fully clothed!

But please pray for the "sento couple" as they are not Christian.  They are both kind-hearted people who know of church, but it requires more than just a kind heart to get go heaven.  Pray that they may be able to see church more than just another religious institution and that they may redirect their kind-hearts in a way that can glorify Jesus!

Saturday was a day of preparation for Sunday as well as an opportunity to have some children ministry at the park...it's getting close to morning prayer now so we're going to skip ahead to our main event here at Akabane Church, the Hawaiian Night Festival which was on Sunday Night.

All our relational ministry (English camp, church member interaction, park ministry, etc) as well as tract passing was for this final event, much like our festival at Shinkoiwa.  And praise the Lord, after a week of preparation and prayer, we were able to have a legitimate Hawaiian Luau!

Not only was there Hawaiian food, decoration, and music, but there were people!  so many people that we could not all fit into the Akabane service room!  God brought many of the church members and our friends from throughout the week.  He also brought out every single person who joined us for English camp, and many of them came with their families!

Hawaiian food is...pineapple fried rice and SPAM musubis!

We were able to share a time of food and fellowship followed by a 40 minute presentation block where we were able to share body worships, skits, and even a Probert (Pastor Robert if you didn't read the last post) sermon.  We were even able to have a festive time of dancing and laughter when all was done.

The party scene...

Thank you everybody for your prayers as we were able to turn a small 2 hour night into a huge night of food, fellowship, gospel sharing, and even church encouraging.  There is only so much more time left to write this blog and so many words that can be typed to fully describe all that needs to be described regarding the people we met and the ministry we had here in Japan for the last month.  We hope that as we were able to share a couple of posts and pictures with you, we were able to keep your prayer lists refreshed and your heart hungry for the land of Japan to see Jesus.

We will see you all back at home very soon!  Talk to us about what you saw and read here, for there is so much more than what these mere words and pictures can say, and we want to share all the blessings we've received here with you back at home.  ,

goodbye for now~!

Today is the day....

Konnichiwa!  Genki desuka?  (Have you been well?)
A lot has happened since our last update almost a week ago!
On Wednesday we wrapped up our ministry at Shinkoiwa Church with a Praise God meeting.  We were able to worship with the church members, give our blessings, and take pictures on final time before moving to Akabane on Thursday morning.  It was definitely a blessed two weeks at Shinkoiwa as our team was able to both encourage and be encouraged by many of the members at Shinkoiwa through small groups, homestays, meals, worship services, and even games of Uno...

Our two faithful friends Yuki (left) and Ryutaro (right)
this almost looks like a...nvm...

Our final picture at Shinkoiwa Church (Kyoukai)
It's the Pastor's family (minus Mana who had to go to school) and our old faithful friend, Uchi-san (He's the g on the right, behind Joe).  Note our giant extra spiffy bus..

"Uchi-san is professional at everything.  He will do it for you"
That quote basically sums up Uchi-san and his value to the church and to our team

On Thursday we finally arrived at our long awaited mystery destination of Akabane Bible Church!  Our first couple days of ministry involved compiling and passing out tracts promoting the church, our Hawaiian Night we are hosting this coming Sunday (similar to our festival at Shinkoiwa) and our daily English lessons from Mon-Thur.  Please pray for these different ministries we are planning and hosting throughout this week!

Our tract promoting English Camp...

Why must everything be in kanji?!

This is the process of assembling...its similar to the process in a sweat shop except we don't sweat too much...in fact it is quite cold.  note the red shawls that keep us warm during the...summer?

The finished products...they intimidate even the strongest of people...

And these are where the tracts go.  We call this find the motherload.

Note Ashley's much more joyous face now that the tracts are all passed out!

On Saturday, after passing out tracts in the morning, we were able to do an outreach event at a church run by the family of one of our friends, Arata!  It was called Joy Joy Saturday and it was a kid's outreach event.

But in order to get to Arata's church, we had to first take a 70 minute cross-country hike...

But God is good.  Rainy season has finished and there is now beautiful weather in Japan!  Just in time for our excursion across Japan (ok fine it was just from one town to the next next but our team likes to think we walked across all of Japan)

At Joy Joy Saturday, we sang VBS songs, performed some of our children skits, met a guy from Australia named Clayton, played water balloon games, and just had a joyous time...joy joy saturday ended up being quite the fitting name...

performing Contagious skit

Some of the precious children

Seeing how the water balloon toss game works

And at the end, we got to play some soccer and dodgeball!

Please pray for the youth of Japan that they may be able to be the next generation of believers!  Jesus called the children precious in His eyes, and they truly are, but here in Japan there are very few Christian youth (most Christians are elderly).  Please pray that the ministry we do with the kids are seeds being planted that God will water and grow.

And finally, yesterday was our first Sunday service at Akabane Bible Church and our first time meeting many of the members of the church.  The congregation is about 40 people spread across three services, the last one finishing at 6pm.  While it was a long day, it was a truly blessing time to be able to meet new faces and share worship and fellowship together!  Our ministry involved sharing body worships and skits, leading a children's bible study, making takoyaki, and even leading an entire service (including praise, offering, and message!).

We got to witness Pastor Robert's (Probert's) first ever sermon!

We have one more week of ministry and one more Sunday service both here in Akabane Church and Japan.  It feels like we just got here and already our time is coming to a close!  Please pray for our team, that we may finish strong!  Also please pray for the members of Akabane Bible Church and the Pastor (Nodera-sensei) that this church may be a beacon of light in this country.

"Be joyful always.  Pray continually.  Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

Halalalalalalalalalalallelujah~

Hellloo!

Since Sarang Festival on Saturday, our team has had the chance to rest and sightsee some of Japan.  PTL!

On Monday we had a chance to "see" and experience true Japanese culture...NAKED PEOPLE!!!!

;) but no pictures of that of course.  just our lovely faces in our yukatas
(note Iris and her content in being with J1...I mean...the Japan STEM teams.
She has been a true blessing to the teams thus far...PTL)

and then we went to New York...

...in Odaiba City...

and this how New York looks at night...
(yea thats the golden gate bridge too...)

Tuesday we went back to the city, this time to do ministry with another missionary (Missionary Bae and Missionary Elton)

Praying for Tokyo from 45th floor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office.
Less than 0.05% of people from this view are Christian...

Bento (Do-shi-rak) break in Yoyogi Park!
We are money conservers...

Then we had open air "dance-off" and "skit-off" with Japanese college students that we met at the park!
They were practicing performance for their classes and clubs but God gave us an opportunity to see them perform and share some of our performances as well!  PTL!

(Pictures to come once Iris uploads...*COUGH COUGH...)

And PTL for the weather!  We were blessed with the most beautiful weather on the day of our festival and both days of our Tokyo outings have been withheld from rain! (when we were outdoors)

We were all ready with our umbrellas...but they ended up just being photoshoot props...

The final ministry opportunity of the day was prayer-walking around Shinjuku and hosting 5-minute English conversations alongside some friends from Texas!

God works through so many different people but all for the same Kingdom to come...PTL!!!

The day finished with a few more stops in Harajuku and Akhibara.  Tomorrow comes our last day in Shinkoiwa Baptist Church before we head to Akabane Church on Thursday.  Praise God for all the ministry opportunities we have had in Shinkoiwa and please pray for our team as we transition into ministry with Akabane Church.

July 11, 2010

Dear Supporters,
Thank you so much for your constant prayer and support. We have had an awesome week and a half here at Shinkoiwa Baptist Church. We hosted our Sarang Summer Festival this past Saturday (July 10th), which was an equivalent to our church’s Easter Hope Festival. We prayed for over 100 people to come out, and to prepare for that we spent the week prior to Saturday passing out tracts at parks and in homes. Our team partnered with church staff members to create the event. Despite the gloomy and rainy weather prior to Saturday, it was bright and sunny the day of the festival, and around 100 people came out! Praise the Lord. Throughout our stay here at Shinkoiwa, we have been thoroughly blessed and encouraged by our interactions with the Shinkoiwa Church members. As we close out our ministry here at this church, we ask that you pray for the following:
       ·   For all those who came out to the Sarang Summer Festival. Over 50-60 non-Christians came out to the event, and even though some of those people only stayed for a few minutes, please pray that their perspective of the church has changed for the better.
       ·  For Shinkoiwa Church. The church has just recently created a second service and it has been a difficult time of transition for the members. This month, the church is also focusing on missions and outreach. Please pray for their upcoming VBS at the end of this month. Please also pray for Pastor Yoshio Kawaguchi and the church staff.
      ·  Pray for our team’s smooth transition to Akabane Bible Church. We will be leaving Shinkoiwa Church on Thursday (July 15th) for Akabane. We will be starting ministry right away with tract passing, park ministry, and English conversation meetings. Please pray for our STEM team as we partner with this church for the first time, as well as for the pastor and the church staff.
Thank you again for your continued partnership and support through prayer and intercession. We hope to update you all again as soon we make the transition to Akabane Bible Church. Arigatou gozaimasu! (Thank you!)
